Yesterday I found out that my mentor had unexpectedly died.
He didn’t know who I was, and I never had the chance to meet him, but this man had a profound impact on my life. He inspired me and made me a better person. He encouraged me with each piece of advice, and he ultimately lead me to start this blog. And between my mentor and my husband, my life has changed so much over the past 5 years. I couldn’t have made the changes I’ve made without the support of these two men.
Yet my mentor, Scott Dinsmore, of Live Your Legend, never knew how much of an impact he had on my life. Reading his blog posts motivated and encouraged me, and gave me the push I needed to start this blog. Scott’s motto is ‘Change the world by doing work you love’ and writing and cooking are the passions I never knew I loved. Scott made it possible for me to not only realise I had these hobbies, but he gave me the hope that my dreams could become reality.
After hearing of Scott’s passing, and earlier that day reading about the plight of the Syrian refugees, I’ve come to understand better than ever before that life is fragile. It can be there one moment and gone the next. It can take you by surprise or it can knock you about the ring and beat you over the head before the end comes. But your life is what you make of it and we want to make the most of every day.
Today’s post is an impassioned plea to start doing what you love.
I’ve also come to realise that there is no one else out there who will fight for you. Other people want what is better for themselves and they won’t wait around to make sure you have what you want in your life. People are selfish and there is too much hatred in this world, so learn to fight for yourself, and take charge of your own life. I spent far too much of my life waiting around for someone to notice me and give me what I wanted, and it felt horrible. Don’t wait around like me, do something that you’ve always wanted to do.
If doing what you love or doing something you really want to do just happens to be having a healthier life, then take that chance today. Don’t wait for some date in the future, because we don’t know whether we’ll each make it to that date. I’m not trying to be morbid, I’m just trying to tell you that putting off what you really want for later is not the best idea.
Healthy eating takes commitment, but you don’t have to do it all at once. Start with one simple change today and let your loved ones know that you’re taking control of your life with that one simple change. Don’t eat that extra cup cake, walk away from the burger store or take carrots sticks to work.
Whatever it is you do, make it count!
If you want to eat healthy and know that healthy eating starts with learning to cook, then stay at Spiced Anecdotes. Look around, check out the posts, look at how I’ve succeeded and failed, and do something new today. Buy a fry pan, stack the fridge with some vegetables or cut 20 potatoes until you have control of that knife.
Whatever it is that you do, make it count!
Just make sure that you are making the move to a healthier life, because all too soon you won’t get any more chances.
